My professional work is closely connected with the instruction I give on the flute and the piccolo. I have a special interest in the teaching legacy of the “father of the American School of flute playing,” famed principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, William Kincaid. Kincaid was the teacher of many great flutists, including my own teachers Frank Versaci, Deborah Carter Smith and John Krell. The later passed down the methodology of the great 20th century pedagogues William Kincaid and oboist Marcel Tabuteau through private instruction and his classic book Kincaidiana.
I am becoming a vocal proponent of the style of playing that continues this special legacy, as the standard flute performance and teaching practices of the last fifty years in America has moved away from these sound traditions. Interviews that I recently gave for The Absolute Sound magazine and for the Powell Flutes artist spotlight describe the wide color palette I achieve with my different style of embouchure as instructed by the teachers listed above.
With this comes a wide range of dynamics. As the harmonic content of a note increases, so does its volume.
